Zack Fair. Possibly one of the coolest characters Nomura has ever created. We are first introduced to him in Final Fantasy 7, that is, once Cloud remembers him. Zack is only shown through flashbacks, and was, unfortunantly, a non-playable character. In Crisis Core, we finally get to take the reigns and see the events that occured before FFVII through Zack's eyes.

Zack begins Crisis Core as an exuberant 16 year old SOLDIER: Class 2^nd, and is a very likely candidate to promoted to SOLDIER: Class 1^st. He is mentored by Angeal, who nicknames him Zack the Puppy, due to Zack's rambunctiousness. Shortly after the mission in Wutai, Zack is granted the promotion to SOLDIER: Class 1^st.

Zack often tends to look before he leaps. He is also extremely loyal to his friends, and has a strong sense of duty. Being from the small town of Gongaga, where after the explosion of a Mako reactor, the town is left in shambles, Zack joined SOLDIER to make his family proud and have a sense of acomplishment.

As Crisis Core unfolds and time passes, we see Zack mature a lot-- then again, the extreme circumstances he faced really didn't leave him any choice.

Timeline. Squeenix pays so little attention, Zack's birthyear is different in the Ultimania books. In FFVII Ultimania 10th Anniversary Edition, it says 1985; in Crisis Core Ultimania, it says 1984.

Zack is born in Gongaga in either 1984 or 1985.
At 13, he goes to Midgar to become a Soldier.
At 16, he is SOLDIER: Class 2^nd.
At 17, he is forced to kill his friends and fellow Soldiers, Sebastian and Essai
18, he goes off on the Nibelheim mission.
At 22 he escapes from the Shinra Mansion with Cloud.
He is killed at 23 on the cliff overhanging Midgar.
