The Illegitimate Child. Lazard is President Shinra's son. Whether Shinra knows this or not is unclear, but Lazard holds a grudge-- the way his 'father' abandoned his mother to raise him alone in the slums. Once he joined Shinra, he climbed the corporate ladder very quickly. He is the Director of SOLDIER. And unlike his father and half-brother Rufus, Lazard is well-mannered and polite. After Genesis does not return from Wutai, it is Lezard that orders Zack and Angeal to see what happened. He actually even goes to Wutai himself to meet with Angeal and Zack. In reality, Lazard was working with Genesis, in order to destroy Shinra. He knew of the Genesis clones.

Everybody wants to be a hero. Somewhere along the line, Lazard sees the error he made in sidding with Hollander and Genesis. Maybe it was Angeal's death and learning what happened to Zack. Either way, knowing he is unable to fight, he injects himself with G-Cells, effectively becoming a Angeal Clone. In Gongaga, Cissnei reports to Zack that Angeal has been cited -- in reality it's Lezard. He stops the Genesis clones from taking Cloud, and after Zack defeats Hollander he explains himself. Though he had once held an alliance with Hollander and Genesis, he tells Zack he has lost his thirst for revenge. Zack is not angry, nor does he even feel betrayed by the form Director's confession. He has become an Angeal clone, and is in the far stages of deterioration, but he became a clone for a specific reason: he wishes to save Zack and Genesis, to save the world. While Zack goes to the Banora Ruins to look for Genesis, Lazard guards Cloud. By the time Zack returns with the rainted Genesis, Lazard is weak and passes away into the LifeStream.
