Insight. Crisis Core gave a marvelous insight of Sephiroth, pre-Nibelheim. Sephiroth was the first SOLDIER. He is extremely strong, efficient, a man of few words. He cares for his friends, Angeal and Genesis, and the three were close. When Genesis is wounded while they are 'sparing', Sephiroth immediately steps up to donate blood.
Sors, immanis. During the investigation of the Nibelheim Reactor, Zack makes note that there may be a link between the monsters in the Mako tanks and SOLDIER. Which disgust Sephiroth. Later, when Genesis asks Sephiroth for his S-cells to stop his deterioration, Sephiroth refuses, tells Genesis to go 'rot elsewhere'. He is disgusted by the monsters and by what Genesis is- a monster. Genesis then tells Sephiroth he is the 'perfect monster', and upon discovery of remains of Jenova, bearing the same name as his 'mother', within the Reactor, Sephiroth begins to question what he is. The thought of not being a human being greatly disturbs Sephiroth. He spends he countless nights in the basement of the Shinra Mansion, reading Gast files on Jenova, the Cetra, and the Jenova Project, requesting to be left alone. When he emerges, he believes that he is a Cetra and that humans have stolen the Planet from his 'mother'. He destroys Nibelheim and goes to get he remains of his 'mother'. Zack confronts him, demanding to know why and telling him I had faith in you...you are no longer the Sephiroth I know. Zack is defeated. Cloud comes into the Reactor, and seeing his friend and Tifa down, he takes the Buster Sword and stabs Sephiroth in the abdomen. Cloud returns to Tifa, but Zack request Cloud finish Sephiroth off. Meanwhile Sephiroth has ripped the head from Jenova and is turning to go when he is confronted by Cloud again. This time he impales Cloud with his Masamune, but somehow Cloud lifts the Masamune, and using it as a lever, knocks an astonished Sephiroth into the LifeStream below...
Acid Rain You have to feel for Zack. Not too long ago, he was forced to kill his mentor, and now his hero has done a complete 180. I don't want to liken Zack to a child, but these were people who were his higher ups- in rank, experience, and age- the very people Zack should be able to turn to for guidance and help are the ones Zack must face off against. I've lived long enough to see the people I looked up to and wanted to be like as a child go down the wrong path and spiral down. It's heart breaking, you feel disillusioned in a way, even a little lost. The same Legendary SOLDIER who stopped the bad guys and saved people, has just slaughtered an entire village, Zack's fight with Sephiroth is just as emotional as his final battle with Angeal, except this time Zack is furious. A single, angry question left to resound within the reactor: Why?!. I respected you. I wanted to be like you. How could you?! The emotion raw in Zack's voice. You are no longer the Sephiroth I know is Zack's attempt to physically separate the man he longed to be like from the man who's sword is now stained with the blood of the innocent villiagers. I'd like to think this is why Sephiroth defeated Zack, Zack was just too emotionally involved in this battle, and Sephiroth was out to kill unlike Angeal who was out to be killed.
